An increasing amount of global news readers know China is leading in Electric Vehicles, solar, on shore wind and off shore wind too. Most might even know that China leads in battery technology. And many know China leads in the manufacturing of all of these technologies. But what many people don’t know is that China also leads the world in hydropower electricity generation.1
China has massive dams throughout and the largest dam in the world: The Three Gorges Dam, which is just a few hours drive from Wuhan, Hubei. China is also the prpject leader on dams all over the world, in Laos, Ghana and elsewhere. China’s hydropower project helped raise electricity generation in Laos from 40% in 2000, to 100% in 2020. And Its dams in other countries are set to help increase electrification elsewhere as well.
The Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest dam is about to be eclipsed by an even larger, more grandiose dam. The project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet aims to overcome significant technical hurdles. Investment could top 1 trillion yuan (US$137 billion), making it one of the costliest infrastructure efforts globally.
China, Already Leading in Hydropower, to Make Miracles China has Approved a Plan to begin Construction on a one Trillion RMB ($137 billion) Mega-Dam in Xizang (Tibet). This will be the world’s most expensive infrastructure project of any type, and will be produce three time the energy of the current world’s largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam, which is also in China.
